Purpose of the role

The Account Director is a senior strategic and campaign client-facing role providing leadership to the LEWIS Purestone account servicing team. The Account Director (AD) ensures that they, and their team, deliver digital marketing excellence, demonstrate ownership, provide solutions grounded in intelligence, and drive innovative thinking and solutions. Additionally, the AD is responsible for meeting client expectations, developing the client relationship and selling in additional services, keeping the team and cients up to date with all activity.

Key responsibilities and tasks

Client Management

  • Delivers an added-value strategic consultancy and works closely with clients to deliver campaigns, services and products through traditional and emerging digital communication channels
  • Understands the essential dynamics, strategies and drivers of the client’s business by staying abreast of their industry’s trends
  • Proactive in putting forward new ideas, finding solutions to client’s business needs – contextualised through the monitoring of competitive activity/industry trends – and bringing fresh digital thinking and innovation
  • Independently leads and makes decisions that properly balance the needs of the account such as those of clients, internal goals and teams
  • Brings rigour to a client’s decision making process by regularly challenging their thinking and building persuasive arguments/business cases
  • Is a confident presenter, able to manage diverse client stakeholder committees and drive consensus amongst them
  • Is adept at interrogating complex and sometimes ambiguous client requirements/briefs to identify the problems and opportunities, and to provide informed and actionable plans for their resolution and capture
  • Translate client requirements into inspiring project/creative briefs that convey the critical elements including objectives, strategies, target audience insights, background and executional considerations etc.
  • Responsible for upholding excellence in delivery; defines and achieves KPIs, deadlines and service agreements (as applicable) for tactical engagements and larger integrated end-to-end solutions
  • Responsible for ensuring effective budget management, account profitability and optimising the impact of revenues on the business
  • Assists with the new business process in collaboration with the senior management team, supporting key decisions and playing a crucial role in selling LEWIS Purestone credentials throughout the pitch/tender process
  • Works closely with the Client Services Director to establish, and maintain, key account development plans for top-tier accounts, ensuring targets are SMART and team efforts are continually focussed on their achievement
  • Works closely with the client and Client Services Director to regularly review account performance, and to set objectives for continual improvement

Digital

  • Works with the Client Services Director to identify opportunities within existing accounts and to propose, plan and pitch compelling ideas and strategies to generate new revenue streams
  • Leads the planning, implementation and maintenance/optimisation of impactful insight-driven digital experiences for LEWIS Purestone clients – from single discipline executions through to multi-channel programmes
  • Acts as a liaison to, and conduit between, cross-functional teams and external stakeholders – including creative, development and project management resources – to ensure client satisfaction, retention, quality of service, and achievement of KPIs for the work tasked to deliver
  • Stays up to date on best practices, techniques and current trends on digital marketing and measurement
  • Continually shares their knowledge with team members to enhance the collective knowledge
  • Uses appropriate analytical tools to interrogate user behaviour and content consumption habits. Leverage these insights to provide informed recommendations to client for campaign optimisation ongoing and to manage these change through the agency

Team working and development

  • Train and mentor more junior members of the team in account handling skills including selling, managing client relationships, understanding and managing revenue and Billing Plans, presentation and document writing
  • To motivate and direct the team but to be equally hands-on where appropriate
  • To create structures, and career plans, that will enable more junior members of the team to grow, succeed and be inspired
  • To lead by example, from the way you conduct yourself as a senior member of staff, to the quality of the work you produce
  • Provide the team with direction and input to ensure business and project goals are met
  • Works closely with the Client Services Director, regularly informing them on the status of business (across all accounts), including escalation as needed

Reporting and analysis

  • Manages account P&L from ensuring accurate revenue/Billing Plan forecasting (across the team), making sure work is delivered on budget, and clients are invoiced according to the proper terms, and increasing ROI for the agency
  • Ensures that all activity and results are reported back to the client, providing insight and analysis across all aspects of the account
  • Communicates account performance internally with the Client Services Director (account reviews) and provides strategic advice to the client based on measurable analytics
  • Monitors and reports back on account KPIs and ensures accurate reporting by junior team members
  • Provides detailed reports to the Client Services Director on request 

General

  • Runs and supports training sessions, with a view to maximising opportunities to expand team skills and grow revenues
  • Takes a proactive role in promoting the LEWIS brand, its work, identity and values
  • Supports the HR / talent team by promoting both internal and external opportunities at LEWIS across social media and via the referral scheme
  • Contributes and supports the continuous improvement of systems, practices and policies

About you

  • Highly commercial with strong strategic client consultancy skills gained in a digital agency environment
  • A track record of retention and the profitable growth of existing accounts
  • Adept at building client relationships; politically astute – natural influencer and connector
  • Adopts a pragmatic approach, that balances assertiveness and flexibility 
  • Considered influential; a strong leader with the skills and aptitude to develop and motivate a team
  • A clear and articulate communicator – able to simplify the complex and the complicated
  • Proven ability to delegate work effectively to a wider team to ensure deliverables are met and workflow is effectively managed
  • Ability to troubleshoot team and client problem areas – and suggest effective remedial courses of action
  • Is independent and has proven abilities in managing multiple internal and external priorities in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced and deadline-driven environment
  • Other traits like resourcefulness, curiosity, open mindedness and passion are highly desirable
