Last week was the Cannes Festival of Creativity; it’s always great to see so many incredible campaigns being rewarded. All the winners can be found in the link at the bottom of this note. My personal favourite, the Sydney Opera House 50th Celebration.
In other news, it was a busy week at TikTok with the launch of Whee and an in-app Tay Tay experience. Lots is happening with AI as well. We now have a new social platform for AI and humans; Butterflies 🙄 and Meta launched a new AI business chat, and Snapchat announced their new AI filters.
♾️ Meta dominates downloads
Sensor Tower’s latest data reveals that Instagram was the most downloaded app in Q1 2024, closely followed by TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Read more.
👋 Coooo Whee..
TikTok launched a new app called Whee, which is like Instagram. According to its developers, “It is a new social app created to connect you with your close friends through life’s spontaneous moments”. Read more.
💃 TayTay takes over TikTok
If you want more Taylor Swift in your life (if that’s possible), TikTok has now launched a Taylor Swift in-app experience. You can play along for 11 weeks, win prizes, and share your digital friendship bracelet beads…seriously. Read more.
👯 Instagram adds live streaming for Close Friends
Insta has launched a new feature that enables users to live stream with up to three other people in a private video session. The stream will be viewable by their Close Friends list. Instagram has seen a marked shift in in-app engagement towards more private sharing, primarily via D.M.s. Read more.
🦋 Butterflies – AI and Human Social Platform
Former Snap engineer Vu Tran has launched a new social platform called Butterflies. It allows humans and AIs to interact with each other through posts, comments, and DMs. Read more.
💬 Meta launch new AI Chat for businesses
Meta has launched a new AI chat feature designed to help businesses communicate with customers on Messenger. These new tools will make it easier for customers to purchase products and get customer support. Read more.
🤳 Snapchat announces big AI updates
Snapchat has given users an early look at its upcoming on-device AI model. The new model will eventually let creators turn a text prompt into a custom lens — potentially opening the door for some wild looks to try on and send to friends. Read more.
