Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics

Mission

Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics [“H.O.M.E.”] is a Singapore-based charity founded in 2004. They are dedicated to empowering and supporting migrant workers who are victims of human rights violations and suffer abuse and exploitation. They work with corporations, government agencies, and community partners to promote inclusion, justice, equality, and dignity for all.

They aim to increase awareness of their situation through public education and campaigns on issues affecting the migrant worker population. Through their advocacy work, they hope to help bring about changes to improve the lives of migrant workers in Singapore. HOME also ramped up the operations at the shelter for domestic workers in distress and to accommodate an increasing number of people reaching out for support.

Why It Matters

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected people from all walks of life, low-wage migrant workers have been disproportionately affected. Domestic workers who have been away from their families are experiencing distress and such well-being issues will be felt long after the immediate COVID-19 crisis is over.

HOME is predicting an increasing number of migrant workers reaching out for assistance over the course of this year and next, as they seek redress for the problems that they are facing during this time. LEWIS recognizes HOME’s mission in providing low-wage migrant workers with immediate financial assistance, medical/counseling assistance, repatriation assistance, shelter & case management to support them when their rights are violated.

‘The value of domestic helpers/low-wage migrant workers is often overlooked. What we don’t realize is how much they make our lives easier and that they have their own family to look after too. Let’s treat everyone kindly, with respect, and also make their lives better.’ – Bev Viloria, Talent Manager, APAC LEWIS.
