🎬 ByteDance pledges to curb Seedance AI after Hollywood backlash

ByteDance’s new AI video generator, Seedance 2.0, has spooked Hollywood and drawn threats of legal action from major studios like Disney. Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter accusing ByteDance of a “virtual smash-and-grab,” claiming the tool was supplied with a “pirated library” of copyrighted characters from franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. The Motion Picture Association and the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA also condemned the tool for unauthorized use and “blatant infringement.” In response, ByteDance told the BBC that it “respects intellectual property rights” and is “taking steps to strengthen current safeguards” to prevent unauthorized use of IP and likenesses.

🍿 Instagram looks to tap into the mini-drama trend

Instagram is officially experimenting with a dedicated “Short Drama” element to capitalize on the wildly popular mini-drama trend that has already gained significant traction on TikTok. These soap opera-style, bite-sized episodes often revolve around tropes like werewolf romance or badly behaving husbands, generally ending on cliffhangers to keep viewers hooked. With the serialized format generating an estimated $1.3 billion in the US last year, Meta is now testing ways for users to easily follow and stay up to date on their favorite short shows directly within the IG app.
