The explosive demand for artificial intelligence and the growth of data centres are revolutionising the energy landscape, generating ripple effects that impact not only businesses but also families. In this constantly evolving context, communication plays a key role in managing complexity, fostering understanding, and building trust among all stakeholders involved.

The New Energy Demand and the Impact on Prices

AI has made data centres the beating heart of the new digital economy. Forecasts indicate that the energy demand of these technological hubs is set to double within a few years, potentially putting energy grids under significant pressure.

As a result, data centres can drive up electricity prices in two ways: first, connecting data centres to the grid often requires costly and upgraded infrastructure; second, the new demand tightens the market, pushing prices higher.

With the end of the regulated energy market in Italy, we have seen greater price volatility. With increased demand from digital infrastructure and industrial users, households – already struggling with bills that are difficult to decipher face further increases without understanding the causes, fuelling concern and mistrust

Governance and Responsibility

The growth of data centres requires careful planning and forward-looking governance, with clear rules and effective tools to incentivize energy efficiency. Strategic planning must not only consider the important role of digital infrastructure to drive technological progress and economic growth, but also the social and environmental impacts.

Close collaboration between technology companies and energy providers will be key to optimising network load but also has the potential to unlock other opportunities including energy and heat sharing, covering the costs of network infrastructure, and implementing flexible network management.

Digital infrastructure providers also have an opportunity to reduce their running costs and boost public trust by adopting new technologies and techniques to reduce their carbon footprint. Transparent communications and sharing benefits with local communities will help to transform perceptions of digital infrastructure, enabling the narrative focus to shift towards the opportunities and advantages of AI.

The Role of Communication: Transparency and Reassurance

Communication plays a crucial role in making the complex relationship between AI, data centres, and energy prices understandable to citizens. Where technological change can generate uncertainty, adopting transparent and accessible communications can help companies to reassure their neighbours and customers.

It is not just about informing, but also actively involving communities, listening to their needs and concerns, and communicating the real actions taken to address these. Clearly communicating the tangible benefits that innovation can bring – from increased employment to the development of new skills – is essential to building consensus and fostering acceptance.

Digital tools such as dashboards, listening platforms, and social media are fundamental for real-time monitoring of stakeholder sentiment. The role of both traditional and digital media is strategic in helping to disseminate accurate information and build a positive fact-based narrative.

Recommended Strategies:

  • Educate the public with simple, clear and compelling campaigns on how data centres work and the real-world benefits of AI.
  • Promote sustainability through investments and concrete actions to reduce consumption.
  • Publish reports and updates on energy choices and environmental impact.
  • Involve the community and listen to stakeholder sentiment.
  • Collaborate with media and opinion leaders to amplify key messages and counter disinformation.

Companies must therefore take responsibility for leading this transition to avoid a general “blackout” in relation with institutions, media, and citizens. Only in this way can they position themselves as credible leaders in the energy and digital transition.
