Cyber attacks have reached new heights in 2025, with headlines dominated by breaches at some of the world’s most recognisable brands

No sector is safe. Even household names like M&S, Co-op, Harrods, Cartier and The North Face have found themselves in the spotlight following significant incidents this year.

The message is clear – cyber threats are now a business-critical risk, not just an IT headache.

A Threat That’s Impossible to Ignore

The problem is staggering. In 2025, “at least one major attack a day” has become the new normal. According to GOV.UK over four in ten businesses (43%) and three in ten charities (30%) reported having experienced some kind of cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. This amounts to approximately 612,000 UK businesses and 61,000 UK charities that identified a cyber breach or attack in the past year.

This raises an important question: why are cyber attacks on the rise?

Here’s a quick look at some of the main reasons:

  • There are more entry points for attackers, with the increase of internet-connected devices (IoT)
  • Businesses now rely heavily on digital systems, which makes them more exposed to breaches
  • Moving to cloud-based services brings new security challenges and vulnerabilities
  • Cybercriminals are using artificial intelligence (AI) to automate and increase their attacks, making them faster and harder to detect
  • Malware is evolving and becoming more sophisticated
  • Many people still aren’t aware of the latest threats, so phishing scams are catching more victims
  • Cybercrime tools are being used, so even inexperienced attackers can launch attacks
  • There’s a shortage of cybersecurity professionals and training, which means organisations can’t project themselves adequately
