AI is playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives. That’s why jumping on board and actively working with this technology is more important than ever.

AI can simplify many tasks and make them more efficient. In order to get the most out of AI, it’s crucial to know how to write effective AI prompts. Together with our AI expert Patrick Weekers, we’ll dive deeper into writing effective AI prompts, so that you can achieve your desired output and get started with creating valuable AI interactions yourself.

In 2022, the introduction of generative AI turned the world upside down. Suddenly, all kinds of AI language models, also called large language models (LLMs), started popping up like mushrooms, with ChatGPT as the global star among AI chatbots. The new possibilities of AI are proving very useful for many different industries. In the marketing and PR world, it has radically changed the way we create content.

But you’ve probably noticed that the output of AI tools isn’t always that great. The secret behind a usable output lies in writing the right AI prompts. Prompt engineering is an art in itself and requires much practice, trial and error. In this blog, we’ll dive deeper into how to write effective AI prompts to get exactly the output you want.

What is AI-prompt engineering?

Let’s start at the beginning: what is a prompt? An AI prompt is the text you enter into an artificial intelligence model to get a response. This can be a question, suggestion or instruction that the AI model then works on. The generated text you get depends entirely on the command you give.

This brings us to AI prompt engineering, an advanced technique within artificial intelligence. It’s all about formulating effective AI prompts to get the AI model to generate the most complete and useful output possible. If you apply this technique well, you’ll get better, more relevant, and more accurate results. In short, a good prompt allows AI models to better understand specific tasks and complex topics, thus generating better answers.

How to Write a Good Prompt for Generative AI

Before we dive into the tips, it’s important to understand that an effective AI prompt will depend heavily on your specific needs. Sometimes, getting to the point and asking a quick question is enough to get the desired result. But other times, more specific prompts are needed to avoid irrelevant information and get the best output. Whatever the situation, these six handy tips will get you started right away.

1. Be specific and concrete

Whether you’re writing a press release, composing an email, or creating something else, every good AI prompt requires concrete and specific information. Specific details in prompts help AI models understand exactly what you’re asking, which allows them to generate accurate and actionable answers. If a prompt isn’t specific enough, the AI may give a generic or irrelevant answer because it’s not clear what exactly you want.

Example: “Write a detailed training plan for a beginning runner preparing for a half marathon. The plan should focus on weekly distances, rest days, speed training, and specific exercises to improve overall fitness.”

2. Provide enough background information

AI prompts work well with as much context as possible, so explain what you want to achieve. It’s not about word count or packing as much text into your prompt as possible. Adding relevant background information, real-world examples, or data to your prompts can help the AI model generate a more accurate, tailored response.

Example: “Imagine you’re writing a blog about the 2024 political elections. You want to write an in-depth piece on the impact of social media on election campaigns. Give me an introductory paragraph explaining how social media is being used strategically by political parties to reach voters and influence their votes. Refer to recent examples or statistics to support your argument. Write in an active manner and avoid jargon.”

3. Clearly explain the goal

As mentioned before, it’s essential to make your goal clear in your prompt. What do you actually want to do with the output that the AI model generates? And what do you want to achieve with it? Your goal will guide the AI model to the right output, so that it seamlessly aligns with what you’re trying to achieve.

Example: “I need help writing an outline for a press release about our new lifestyle product: a pair of sustainable, handmade sunglasses with polarized lenses. The goal of this press release is to capture the attention of lifestyle journalists and drive sales of our new product. Can you come up with a concise structure for the press release that highlights the sunglasses’ unique features, such as their eco-friendly materials and stylish design?”

4. Specify the results

In your prompt, also provide clear instructions about the length, structure, tone of voice, desired style and structure of the text. Think of headings, subheadings, quotes, etc. In addition, also indicate what you want the result to look like. Do you want a three-column, five-row layout or a bullet point list? Be clear and specific about what you expect.

Example: “Can you help me write an outline for an Instagram post promoting our newest shoe model? The post should be 70 words or less and have a professional, yet teasing tone of voice. Create a bullet point outline that highlights the shoe model’s unique features, such as comfort, bright colors, and breathable soles.”

5. Use easy language

Just as humans prefer clear text, so do AI models. Therefore, use simple language in your prompt and avoid jargon or vague formulations. Also, watch out for spelling errors, as they can affect the AI’s output.

For example, a bad prompt might be: “Propose a narrative about the theoretical framework and practical implementation of machine learning algorithms.” A better prompt might be: “Propose a short summary of no more than 150 words about how AI models work. Use simple language and avoid technical jargon. Watch for spelling errors and summarize in bullet points.”

6. Determine your target audience

It is also important to consider your target audience in your prompt. Who is the output intended for? This could be media, such as lifestyle media or tech media, but also specific target groups, such as entrepreneurs, generation Z, or single mothers between 25 and 45 years old.

Example: “Can you help me write an outline for a blog about fun summer vacation activities for moms with kids between the ages of three and five? I want the activities to be appropriate for this specific age group and to be able to do them both indoors and outdoors. The tone should be warm and inviting, aimed at young moms who are looking for fun and educational activities for their kids during the holiday season.”

Extra tip for effective prompts and content creation: make a checklist

Finally, it is highly recommended to make a checklist for yourself with the criteria that the generated text must meet. When are you satisfied? When does it meet your goals and requirements? And when can you start with creative writing? It is best to do this before you start writing a prompt.
